Resort Operator Partners With Renewable Energy Provider to Deploy Solar Microgrids Across Luxury Properties
SINGAPORE, March 15, 2025 — Coral Bay Resorts, a leading sustainable hospitality group operating luxury properties across the Indo-Pacific, has entered a landmark partnership with Azure Energy Solutions to implement advanced solar microgrid systems at three flagship resorts, marking one of the hospitality sector’s most aggressive renewable energy transitions to date.
The multi-phase initiative will install 5.2 megawatts peak (MWp) of solar photovoltaic capacity coupled with 4.7 megawatt-hours (MWh) of lithium-ion battery storage, enabling the resorts to derive 50% of their electricity from renewable sources. The systems are engineered to reduce diesel consumption by approximately 2 million liters annually while cutting carbon emissions by 5,000 metric tons per year. According to industry analysis, the Maldives alone hosts over 150 resort islands, representing a significant market opportunity for similar floating solar solutions that can operate effectively in nearshore marine environments. The first installation is scheduled for completion at Coral Bay’s flagship property in the Maldives by Q2 2025, with subsequent rollouts in Fiji and Seychelles by year-end.
Azure Energy Solutions will design, procure, and commission the hybrid microgrids using its proprietary floating solar technology optimized for island resorts. The systems integrate three 74-meter diameter solar rings anchored with hydro-elastic membranes, a configuration proven to withstand wave heights exceeding 1-2 meters while delivering superior cost-performance ratios compared to traditional fixed installations. Each microgrid will operate autonomously, providing 24-hour power through intelligent load management and grid-forming inverters that ensure seamless transitions between solar, battery, and backup generation. The battery storage capacity will extend renewable power availability into evening hours, covering peak guest activities and facility operations.
“The hospitality industry has reached an inflection point where sustainability is no longer optional but fundamental to competitive positioning,” said James Chen, CEO of Azure Energy Solutions. “Our partnership with Coral Bay demonstrates that luxury experiences and environmental stewardship can coexist profitably. By eliminating diesel dependency, these resorts will reduce operational volatility while delivering the premium eco-conscious experience modern travelers demand.”
Market data indicates that renewable energy adoption in the tourism sector has accelerated dramatically, with major operators including MGM Resorts and IHG Hotels & Resorts committing to 100% renewable electricity procurement by 2030. The global floating solar market is projected to exceed $10 billion by 2030, driven by land scarcity and the higher energy yields from water-based installations. For island resorts, microgrids offer energy independence from imported fuel prices that can fluctuate up to 40% annually.
The project’s financial structure employs a power purchase agreement model requiring zero upfront capital from Coral Bay Resorts. Azure Energy Solutions will own and operate the infrastructure under a 20-year contract, delivering electricity at rates 15-20% below current diesel-generated power costs. Construction will proceed without interrupting resort operations, with modular components assembled offsite and installed during brief maintenance windows.
