Boutique Hotel Partners With Local Designers for In-Room Collections
AMSTERDAM, Netherlands – June 4, 2025 – Hotel De L’Europe, Amsterdam’s iconic independent five-star property since 1890, today announced the official launch of ‘t Huys, a groundbreaking initiative that reimagines 14 guest rooms through collaborations with the Dutch capital’s most influential designers, studios, and cultural institutions. The program transforms traditional accommodations into immersive living galleries, allowing guests to experience museum-quality design firsthand.
The initiative arrives as cultural immersion becomes one of hospitality’s fastest-growing luxury segments, with the experiential travel market projected to exceed $20.6 trillion by 2032, according to recent industry analysis from Luxury Travel Magazine. As travelers increasingly seek authentic connections to destination culture, hotels like De L’Europe are moving beyond conventional art displays to create fully integrated design experiences that support local creative economies.
Hotel De L’Europe’s ‘t Huys project—named after the Dutch word for “rooms”—features bespoke spaces crafted by a curated roster of Amsterdam’s creative leaders, including jewelry designer Bibi van der Velden, fashion house Salle Privée, contemporary gallery Ravestijn, and KOKKE House. Each participant applied their distinct aesthetic vision to create cohesive room environments where every element, from furniture to textiles to lighting fixtures, tells a story of Dutch craftsmanship.
“Staying connected to our community is essential, and through ‘t Huys, we aim to offer guests something truly unique,” said Lisette de Koning, experience manager at Hotel De L’Europe. “This project reimagines traditional hotel spaces as multifunctional cultural hubs that celebrate Amsterdam’s 750-year legacy of creativity while providing guests an intimate, personal encounter with design excellence.”
The collaborations extend beyond mere decoration. KOKKE House founder Daniel Beasley selected design objects by Ruud-Jan Kokke—pieces held in the permanent collections of the Rijksmuseum and Stedelijk Museum—complemented by original paintings and sculptures by Petra Hartman. The room features handblown lamps created in partnership with historic Dutch crystal maker Royal Leerdam and the iconic Pootjes! canopy bed, reinterpreted from Kokke’s 1999 chair design.
“The collaboration offers guests a rare opportunity: not just to see our design classics, but to live with them,” Beasley explained. “It turns a museum-quality experience into something intimate, personal, and real.”
Perhaps the most ambitious partnership materializes in the Van Gogh Museum suite, where the institution translated masterworks into a multi-sensory environment. The design captures the energy of Van Gogh’s vibrant palette while incorporating an audio narrative that guides guests through stories behind key artworks. Museum-edition replicas of the artist’s four sketchbooks and letters to his brother Theo provide literary depth, while the bathroom delivers an olfactory experience featuring sunflower and almond blossom scents that reference the painter’s practice.
Guests may select a 3D replica of either The Bedroom or Sunflowers prior to arrival, delivered via white-glove butler service. “It is not a substitute for a museum visit, but a special addition,” noted a museum representative. This approach addresses a growing demand among luxury travelers for experiences that transcend traditional gallery viewing, offering instead a lived encounter with cultural heritage.
The program’s structure reflects a broader industry shift documented in hospitality research from Switch Hotel Solutions, which found that boutique properties featuring locally crafted décor report stronger guest satisfaction metrics and deeper community ties. The research indicates that guests who engage with authentic local design remain 34% more likely to recommend properties and demonstrate 28% higher rates of return visits.
Hotel De L’Europe, as Amsterdam’s only remaining independent five-star hotel, occupies a unique position to pioneer such initiatives. The property’s management views ‘t Huys as both a competitive differentiator and a civic responsibility, particularly as the city celebrates its 750th anniversary. Each room functions as a rotating gallery space, with many pieces available for purchase through direct arrangements with artists and studios—eliminating commissions and ensuring creators retain full financial benefit.
The timing aligns with post-pandemic recovery strategies that emphasize experience-based offerings. As Lisette de Koning observed, “Independent hotels have larger freedom in taking creative liberties and immersing guests with unparalleled experiences.” The project originated during lockdowns as a proposed artist residency before evolving into permanent themed accommodations, demonstrating adaptive strategy in challenging market conditions.
Initial guest response has validated the concept. Since soft-launching select rooms in March 2025, the hotel reports 92% occupancy rates for ‘t Huys suites—17% above property-wide averages—and unprecedented social media engagement, with guests sharing their immersive experiences across platforms. The initiative has also generated coverage in 12 international design publications, amplifying Amsterdam’s profile as a design destination.
The program will expand quarterly, with plans to incorporate additional Dutch design studios and potentially collaborate with the newly renovated Stedelijk Museum. Future phases may include designer-led workshops, where guests learn directly from participating artisans, further blurring lines between hospitality and cultural education.
